Greetings all Calabar Lions at home and abroad. The track season has began in earnest and we have a few updates relating to the management of the team so far. The Calabar Sports Committee (Committee of the Board of Directors) has appointed me (Ewan G. Shaw) manager of the team for the current season (2024/25)
I have been a member of the management team since 2011 to present and have been an integral part of the seven straight run. I am a graduate of the class of 1982 and have served in many capacities on COBA in past years. Professionally I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for the finance division at the University of Technology, Jamaica.
Other new members of the team include Russell Thompson, Philip Burke-Green, Andrew Wynter and Pete Smith.
Our coaching staff consist of Corey Bennett (Head coach), Errol Messias (distant), Christopher Harley (Hurdles and sprints), Gary “Baga” Walsh (fitness and 400m), Julian Robinson (throws) and Marlon Gayle (Jumps coach).
Marlon Gayle is the new coach on staff. He is a former head coach of St. Jago and a field events and Jumps coach at Edwin Allen.
The team is now over seven weeks in training with over 115 boys participating. The training regime focuses presently on strength work and building core, We have been going hills for the last 4 weeks and will be continuing for the next 3 weeks. The coaches are quite pleased with the responses of the boys to the programme and are quite impressed with the training times they are producing.
Our distant boys will participate in the Burger King 5K on Sunday November 10th 2024 at 6:30 Emancipation Park. We will update you on the results asap.
We are very optimistic and expect our lions to perform at the utmost for the highest this season.
